Final day and it started with a friendly encounter with a porky fellow. He just wanted to say hello and have his back scratched. It was a hot day. Luckily a lot of the walk was high on a ridge in the trees. Then it dropped down to the valley alongside the river; that was… Continue reading Day 12 Monmouth to Sedbury cliffs – the end (2nd June)
A day of historical buildings from churches, to castles and finally to an Abey. The weather started off with cloudy drizzle. The sun broke through as I reached White Castle. It wasn’t locked and there was nobody else there. An enchanting spot to rest for a while. A very pretty day but hard work in… Continue reading Day 11 Pandy to Monmouth (1st June)
Started off in low cloud and drizzle. The route was up 500m and along a ridge on the edge of the Breacon Becons…not promising. The hills below are the lower section of the ridge, there is no sign of the top. The path was excellent and so it didn’t matter that I couldn’t see more… Continue reading Day 10 Hay-on-Wye (31st May)
Distance done to date 200km (125miles). 82km (51 miles) left to go in the next 3 days. A steep climb out of Kingston to Hergest Ridge; common land with stunning views when not in cloud. At one point on the top was a small grove of Monkey Puzzle trees. Further on was a quaint church… Continue reading Day 9 Kington to Hay-on-Wye (30th May)
An early start in low cloud. As expected, there are a lot of sheep in Wales. I guess I hadn’t realised how many different types that are. It cleared up in the afternoon but was still very hazy. A very pretty section. Arrived at Kington and checked into the YHA… I’ve got a double bed… Continue reading Day 8 Knighton to Kington (29th May)
A car shuffle to start the day. Drove the campervan to the end of the walk and taxi-ed to the beginning. That way, we could all walk together, the whole way. After the rain yesterday it was a dry day; warm and very hazy. All along the walk there have been Hawthorne trees in bloom.… Continue reading Day 7 Mellington Hall to Knighton (28th May)
Massive thunderstorm last night with lashings of lightening, thunder and rain. We delayed going out but eventually just went for it wearing some very fetcing ponchos over our rain gear. The rain came down like a monsoon. Half way,the rain stoped enough for us to eat lunch and dry out a bit. It started again… Continue reading Day 6 Buttingtin Bridge to Mellington Hall (27th May)
Started with the Montgomery Canal; not navitagable for boats as a little over grown but a haven to birds and their young. Very pretty. Soon after that, Ros and I encountered some very friendly but scarey looking sheep, (especially if you’ve seen the film ‘Black Sheep’). Walked beside the River Severn and saw a calf… Continue reading Day 5 Llanymynech to Buttington Bridge (26th May)
It rained alot! Met Dave and Ros which was fab. Overnighting in an alpaca field.
Off through forests and across moors with only sheep for company. Then some amazing limestone scenery near Llangollen. Would love to come back and walk across the top of the escarpment without a heavy pack. Finished the day at the canal aquaduct over the river Dee. AirBnB tonight which is a shed at the bottom… Continue reading Day 4 Llandegla to Froncysyllte (24th May)
Another warm day forecast, so another early start. Away from the campsite at 6.00am. Not a soul about. Lots of hills and valleys; Clwydian Range is very pretty. Also many historic burial mounds and forts. In the picture below the highest hill in the distance was Moel Famau and that was about half way. The… Continue reading Day 3 Bodfari to Llandegla (23rd May)
Up at the crack of dawn and away from the campsite at 6.30am. It was a bit cloudy which was good because it was very hilly. The temperature warmed up by 11 ish so took it slow. Arrived at the campsite by 14.00, so tent up and off to the pub for lunch. Picallili on… Continue reading Day 1 Prestatyn to Bodfari (22nd May)
Arrived in Prestatyn ready for some ‘uteglede’ as described in the flight mag… Tent up, gas purchased, start of walk visited. Time for dinner at the pub before an early night and an early start tomorrow.
Mixed emotions packing up tent for the last time. Happy to be going going home but a little sad that the adventure was almost over. Set off up the south side of the estuary to Bideford, over the bridge and then back down the north side. I didn’t take any pictures; enough said. Approaching Instow… Continue reading Day 31 (Appledore to Barnstaple)
Bin day in Clovelly as I left this morning! First part of the walk was along The Hobby Drive; a carriage drive created back in early 1900’s. Great for walking on and beautiful, old trees. More woodland followed and it was far superior vegetation than yesterday, so I didn’t mind not seeing the view. The… Continue reading Day 30 (Clovelly to Appledore)
I had a walking mate today! Ian, the Welsh guy walking to John O’Groats, was also heading to Clovelly and so we joined forces. It was nice to be able to share comments with somebody for a change. The weather was perfect for walking and not quite as hilly as the day before. A lot… Continue reading Day 29 (Elmscott to Clovelly)
Weather started bright but quickly turned to rain and heavy fog. The rain past but the fog was there for the whole day. It seems on the 2 most iconic view days, I’ve seen very little. Ho hum, just means I need to come back. The fog was a blanket covering most of the cliffs.… Continue reading Day 28 (South of Bude to Elmscott)
Left Tintagel early, went through Rocky Valley and on to Boscastle; a very pretty place. The scenery today was different, just as dramatic, but a lot more layers many overturned. Again a very strenuous day with lots of ups and downs and big drops. The steps below seemed to just disappear over the edge. Finally… Continue reading Day 27 (Tintagel to just south of Bude)
Ok, so about last night, I posted the blog whilst eating down in Polzeath and then headed up the hill to the campsite. Unfortunately, there is old and new Polzeath and I went to the wrong one. Found a campsite, realised it wasn’t the one and ended up trying to navigate along tiny roads with… Continue reading Day 26 (Polzeath to Tintagel )
A very windy night…outside before you ask! Not a great nights sleep, so up and away early. Interesting rock formations on the way to Padstow. Padstow was lovely but busy; apparently not as horrendous as it will be next week with 1/2 term. Must admit that I’m not looking forward to more people on ‘my’… Continue reading Day 25 (Treyarnon to Polzeath)
Survived the solo camp and enjoyed it. Was away early towards Newquay and had to wade across the Gannel estuary. Manged to avoid the town and walked across the superb surfing beach. The weather was super hot and it was hard work. Past Bedruthan Steps and lots of other lovely views. Swam athe Porthcothan and… Continue reading Day 24 (Porth Joke to Treyarnon)
Leisurely start with Paul driving me to Portreath to resume the north coast. Beautiful suring beaches; Porthtowan, Chapel Porth and Perranporth. Very sunny in the afternoon so had to stop for a swim; cold but refreshing! Walked on in the evening looking for my first wild camping spot. Reached the beautiful beach called Porth Joke… Continue reading Day 23 (Portreath to Porth Joke)
A bit of backwards and forwards the last couple of days, taking advantage of staying with cousins and not needing to walk with a full pack. So after today, the walk is complete around to Portreath. From now on I’m heading for home with the a full pack. So today was beautiful scenery, or so… Continue reading Day 22 (Lamorna to Botallack )
Long day in the sun, but perhaps most scenic day yet….the pictures can tell the story. St Ives…..
Early start for a Sunday; walking by 7:30. Pretty coves initially and then a fairly flat part, along roads, through Marizion, Penzance, Newlyn and Mousehole. A nice point of interest was St Michael’s Mount. In Penzance I found a loo with a full length mirror, so had to check out my look! The shorts have… Continue reading Day 20 (Praa Sands to Lamorna Cove)
Was up and away this morning before 8:00 am. Must have been something to do with the cockeral. Before I left, I met a woman well in her sixties who was walking the whole thing and then going to do the whole of the Thames, North and South Downs and then around the Isle of… Continue reading Day 19 (Kynance Cove to Praa Sands)
Just some of the flowers from today. Beautiful scenery again today with the beautiful Kennak Sands, where we used to go as kids. Cadgwith Cove, a lovely little fishing harbour. Reached the most southerly point of the UK, the Lizard point, early afternoon. Diverted to the campsite inland to put my tent up and then… Continue reading Day 18 (Coverak to Kynance Cove)
Restarted the journey from Falmouth in the sunshine. Pretty coves around to the Helford estuary. Jumped straight on the small ferry and had a pasty on the other side to celebrate. Next stop was Gillian Creek which should be wadable at low tide. Alternatively you can walk up and around it……or cheat entirely and pay… Continue reading Day 17 (Falmouth to Coverak)
Early drop off at Portreath in drizzle but some lovely scenery regardless. On a deadline to get to Lelant in order to have a lift back. Marched along with out stopping, except to take a few pictures….. Just before Godrevy lighthouse I saw a few seals! There were over 50. Reached my cousin Paul’s house… Continue reading Day 16 (Portreath to Lelant)
Spent time with our lovely Cornish relatives. Weather forecast still bad so I’m going to do a bit of a cheat tomorrow. Do a section out of order and in the wrong direction. Means I can have another night here and dry out after what will be a very soggy day tomorrow.
